At Mediatec, 2009 has been packed full of exciting events – and we’re rounding it off with the last Swedish TV production of the year, the Midnight Bells.
From everyone at Mediatec, have a very happy 2010!
As part of the ’Julstaden Göteborg’ (Christmas in Gothenburg) annual event, every day between the 11th and 31st December the seasonal film ’Hjärtan som Julklappar’, which was produced by Eyebrite, will be shown. As in previous years, the film will be projected onto the facade of the city’s Museum of Art using Mediatec projectors. Sound and light technology are also supplied by Mediatec.
Mediatec wishes everyone a happy holiday with this picture from the Stockholm Fair where through Sense For Expo, we supplied the large screen solution.
During the year have we invested in two new remote camera systems, the SONY Z-700 and Sportcams 4 HD from TV Skyline. The cameras have different areas of application and are both High Definition and Standard Definition capable.
Setup can be done as stand alone or together with multiple cameras in fibre network. Preset positions are available and the cameras can be operated over long distances both in and outdoors.
The Sportcam 4 has a unique fibre interface over which HD and SD signals, audio, communication, remote data and even 220-voltage power can be sent. This makes it possible to locate the camera up two 2km away from the OB unit and supply everything using just one simple SMPTE fiber cable.

A downloadable technical specification will soon be available at the product site.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self- organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*

About TED
TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.” The diverse audience — CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists — is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono.
TED was first held in Monterey, California, in 1984. In 2001, Chris Anderson’s Sapling Foundation acquired TED from its founder, Richard Saul Wurman. In recent years, TED has expanded to include an international conference, TEDGlobal; media initiatives, including TED Talks and TED.com; and the TED Prize. TED2010, “What the world Needs Now,” will be held Feb 9-13, 2010, in Long Beach, California, with a simulcast in Palm Springs, California. TEDGlobal 2009, “The Substance of Things Not Seen,” will be held July 21–24, 2009, in Oxford, UK and TEDIndia will be held in November 2009.
The Swedish advertising competition, 100-wattaren (The 100 Watt) rewards quantifiably effective campaigns produced during the previous year. The competition is organised by the Swedish Advertisers Association and Swedish Communication Agencies Association and winners in seven categories receive their prizes in a gala which was organised this year by Baluba. Mediatec had sole responsibility for technology, a task that included sound production for both the presentations and entertainment, lighting, lighting design, big-screen projection and camera production for live broadcasting.
Mediatec was chosen as total solutions supplier of technology and functionality to the Social Democratic Party’s congress at the Stockholm Exhibition Hall between the 28th October and 1st November 2009.
This diverse and challenging project involved 65 Mediatec personnel working in shifts over five long congress days. Part of our task involved the projection of digital background décor behind the congress stage (21 meters in width), a congress administration system for the management of speaker motions, speaker order and voting, camera production for live pictures in the Viktoriahallen as well as distribution to an internal TV system and various TV companies, amongst those SVT24, who were covering the event live. Lighting with colour and pattern variation on the stage boundaries, dependent on the subject being discussed was also created. These colours were a common theme, replicated in the printed material available at the event. Mediatec was also responsible for IT solutions in rooms designated for practical functions.
In the connecting exhibition, a space for smaller debates, presentations and entertainment from two stages was created. On Saturday evening, the traditional congress party took place, including entertainment from some of Sweden’s leading musicians. For this, Mediatec was fully responsible for lighting, sound and camera work.
Every autumn the Karolinska Institute arranges a professorial presentation in its Berwald Hall in which new professors introduce themselves, departing professors express their thanks and prizes are awarded. For this year’s event, Mediatec supplied technicians, producers, photographers, sound technicians, technical project management, sound for the stage, a mixer board and naturally, screen technology.
On the 6th of October it was time once again for the world’s biggest and oldest bus fair, Busworld Europe Kortrijk. The solution we supplied included the fair’s largest plasma screen, an impressive 103” in size, five 40” LCD screens, one 40” plasma screen and sound equipment.
Mediatec was responsible for technical delivery and functionality when Ericsson presented their 3rd quarter report to their global workforce.
The main presentation and entertainment was transmitted from a studio in Stockholm to which Mediatec supplied picture, light, sound and OB technology. Ericsson personnel in Göteborg also took part using a satellite link. The entire meeting was streamed out to everywhere in the world Ericsson is represented.
Mediatec has been chosen as official sponsor and partner for EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. We will deliver services to the project, which will take place between 1st May and 31st October.
On Tuesday the 13th of October, Massteknik Sweden AB, Massteknik UK Ltd, Mediateknikk AS and Primetec AB unite under the common brand Mediatec. This means that every company in the Mediatec Group is now under the Mediatec name and brand. Previously, all companies operating in the broadcasting field changed name to Mediatec Broadcast.
“For many years and on many projects, we’ve worked side by side, so this union represents a natural step towards packaging our common services and providing customers with a unique offer”, says Kenneth Paterson, CEO of the Mediatec Group.
Today, Mediatec has around 300 employees in seven countries and a yearly turnover of approximately €85 million. The company’s projects include many international events including the Frankfurt International Motor Show, several Olympic Games, the Eurovision Song Contest, the production and broadcast of football in Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland and international meetings and conferences.
“Our vision is to operate locally and internationally to the same high levels of quality and creativity as previously. This union will provide synergy our customers will benefit from,” adds Kenneth Paterson.
To coincide with the change to a common brand, Mediatec will restructure its products and services into four offers: Broadcast, Display, Event and Installation.

The 63rd Frankfurt International Motorshow has recently ended. Over the Press Days, Mediatec supplied a complete press conference solution for Volvo Cars with no less than one 3-camera and 6 VB channel production in full HD, three simultaneous picture productions, prompter system, PA system, speaker lighting and show lighting comprising of twenty four VL 3000 and six VL 2500 adjustable lights. We handled the press conferences using only 10 people - a uniquely low number for such a production and the result of multi-tasking within the group. Another noteworthy point concerning our role at Frankfurt was the supply of our in-house developed distribution system for programs, images and sound for journalists at the event.

Liège, Belgium – 04 September 2009 – Mediatec Broadcast, specialized in managing large scale events in sports and entertainment, has chosen EVS Instant Tapeless Technology for the production and broadcast of two premium sports channels in Norway.
Mediatec Broadcast, which is part of the Mediatec Group, one of Europe’s leading corporations in live events and television productions, chose to work with EVS Instant Tapeless Technology to produce and broadcast Viasat Sport in Norway and the new Viasat Football. Viasat is owned by the Swedish media company Modern Times Group (MTG).
Arne Stenstadvold, Technical Manager at Mediatec Broadcast: "Last October, MTG asked Mediatec Broadcast to develop a playout platform for the new premium sports channel Viasat Sport. At the time, the new Viasat Football, which had been airing for three years already as SportN, also needed a system with a much higher degree of automation. Our main concern was to find a flexible and open solution for the transfer of files to and from our Final Cut Server SAN. The integration of the production and playout servers with the Morpheus automation system from Snell was also considered. Since EVS proposed solutions that would meet these demands, and also because the crew was used to working with the loop-recording technology and appreciated its speed, we decided to use EVS technology for both channels.”
EVS provided a series of HD/SD XT[2] production and playout servers handling all ingest and playout requirements for both Viasat Sport and Viasat Football. The ingest control, metadata management, and production content management is executed with EVS IPDirector software and Snell’s Morpheus automation system. The fast turnaround productions that include live analysis and highlights packages are produced with EVS’ MulticamLSM application. The EVS servers are interconnected to a highly efficient Hybrid network, EVS XNet[2] for live and instant sharing across the entire production platform, and a Gigabit Ethernet network for bi-directional file transfers to and from the MediaBank, a 20TB Apple Xsan system with a Final Cut Server. The 24/7 rundown of both channels is managed with the Morpheus automation controlling the XT[2] ports.
“We are accustomed to the speed and functionality of the XT[2] servers and wanted to combine these features with an automated playout system for our new transmission control. The fact that EVS technology can handle the media management that is connected to our Final Cut Pro system, allows content to be shared between production, post-production and archiving in a very efficient way. All material cleared for transmission is then managed by Morpheus, which controls playout of content on and between several XT[2] servers in the system. We are pleased to say that both Snell and EVS have made a big effort in making this system and workflow possible,” said Eirik Nakken, Technical Operations Manager at Mediatec Broadcast.
“EVS is a reliable partner of the Mediatec Group. This turnkey project and the integration with Snell’s Morpheus automation system enabled us to streamline our productions while being more efficient and cost-effective,” said Paul Henriksen, CEO of Mediatec Broadcast.
Julien Fraipont, EVS Sales Manager of Scandinavia, adds: “The decision of Mediatec Broadcast to choose EVS clearly demonstrates our ability to deliver a combined hardware/software solution that not only provides benefits in terms of the production and turnaround of both channels, but also illustrates EVS’ commitment to an open architecture where the integration with the Morpheus Automation system from Snell and the Apple Final Cut Server is seamless.”
As we write this, the 41st annual ice hockey tournament TV-Pucken is taking place. Quarter finals, semi-finals and naturally the final will be broadcast this weekend by Mediatec Broadcast OB5, amomgst others.
For many years, the Slotkoncerts (Castle Concerts) have been a tradition in which the DR UnderholdningsOrkestret (Danish Radio Orchestra) performs pieces by famous artists on stage with the artist themselves.
This year, it is 50 years since the Bee Gees arrived on the Australian music-scene and Slotkoncerter was proud to present Robin Gibb live on stage, performing classic Bee Gees songs (Who doesn’t know ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and ‘How Deep Is Your Love’?)
With the 45 strong DR Underholdingsorchestra and David Firman conducting, tickets had never sold so quickly and 65 000 people were watching the show on Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th of August.
The stage, supplied by Seelite, was covered in blue fabric, making it look like a castle taken straight out of a fairytale. As the show is recorded for a TV-broadcast in the autumn, light, video and sound have to be perfect and fulfill tough demands.
This year, there were 2 Image screens, Lighthouse R7, delivered by ComTech while Massteknik were able to supply new Spider F30 background graphic screens for the first time. The Bee Gees production used the 5 screens, each 12 m2 in size, to show time-coded graphics created for each individual song. As a result, the whole show looked like one great concept where light, sound and especially video were part of the song itself.
The public simply loved it, singing along, dancing and reliving Bee Gees memories from “the good old days”.
The Spider screens were perfect for the job. Lightweight, easy to set-up and able to run with minimum power.
The small number of cables made the whole setup look ‘clean’, and the stable noise (flicker) free picture looked perfect on camera.
Mediatec Broadcast has now taken the big step up to become Denmark’s largest OB supplier of sport productions by agreeing a contract with the sports channel Canal 9, which is owned by Canal+/TV4. The 3-year contract means that Mediatec Broadcast will be the exclusive supplier of 2 SAS Liga matches per week up until season 2011-2012. The project includes delivery of OB technology, producers, a complete technical crew as well as responsibility for production planning and coordination. The agreement also covers a large, 12 camera production with studio match analysis for one hour and a smaller, 6 camera production with a small pitchside studio for every match.
The new agreement makes us the biggest OB supplier of sport productions in Denmark. Unlike earlier live broadcasts from Denmark, we’re now supplying our own producer. Together with our special cameras, this assignment is a great example of a comprehensive solution delivery of the Mediatec Broadcast concept, says Carin Eriksson, Production Manager for Mediatec Broadcast ApS.
Mediatec Broadcast has previously had a 3-year agreement with Viasat to cover a large number of matches as well as an agreement with Danish TV2 Sport Viasat under which we covered all live league matches in HD. This agreement has now been extended for another 3-year period.
